- DEATHFACE - (Trouble & Bass/ Chicago) ------------------------------
Our buddy Deathface aka Johnny Love is touring again for his scary new full length release on T&B called "From Beneath"!
"Teaming up with vocalist Effy, Trouble & Bass's Deathface's forthcoming EP is not for the faint of heart. It certainly fulfills both the "trouble" and the "bass" requirements set forth by the Brooklyn label; rather than a set of dance tracks, the 8-track From Beneath is more of a punk or industrial album, although on the darkest of dance floors, these songs wouldn't feel out of place. Deathface answers the question of what would happen when a dark dubstep night meets a goth-industrial one. If you're not feeling kind of mean already, you might when you're done. The EP comes out July 17." - Earmilk Blog
Now for some history…Johnny Love is one of the most provocative figures in dance music. A native of Southside Chicago, Johnny rose to infamy in his hometown in the early 2000’s throwing a series of events at The Jerkstore that shunned predictable-dance-rock for eclectic and loose cuts from minimal techno to French touch house. The parties got so wild that Love was imprisoned by the Chicago police on more than one occasion.
With things too hot in Chicago, Johnny moved to Los Angeles and formed hard-hitting electro-house duo Guns N’ Bombs who were quickly offered a contract by Kitsuné founder Gildas Loaec. After a vast amount of critical acclaim and the making of many friends, enemies and frenemies Guns N’ Bombs disbanded in 2009, and Johnny decamped to a hideaway in Charlotte, NC to craft Deathface’s swift and deadly takeover and work on various collaborations, including an amazing t-shirt through Mishka designed by Seattle’s death-rock-obsessed street wear giants Actual Pain.
- MORRI$ - (Night Slugs/ Team Bear Club/ Lawrence KS) -----------
Philesciono Canty aka Morri$, is one of the newest artists on the major UK label: Night Slugs (Girl Unit, Bok Bok), and one of the only from the US, Lawrence Kansas to be exact. His sound is a fresh take on modern bass music flipping 808 samples and styles in new exciting ways.
Phil is also one of the main contributing members of the Team Bear Club and their very popular monthly: Goomba Rave in Lawrence.
This will be Morri$'s first time touring the West Coast, and we're excited to have him droppin his signature bass styles on the Fathom System!
Make sure and peep his beats on the Soundcloud link below.
- CHLLNGR - (Time No Place/ Copenhagen Denmark) -----------------
Combining elements of dub and R&B with a nocturnal aesthetic, Copenhagen-based producer CHLLNGR (aka Steven Jess Borth II) is one of the freshest sounds to emerge so far this year. Today he debuts his upcoming album's centerpiece "Haven" on Pitchfork which they call "chilling, goosebump-inducing". The album's title track utilizes ghostly african rhythms and cavernous pads to coil around Borth's indistinguishable, yet hopeful-sounding intonations.
After a slew of well-received remixes (The XX, Primary 1, MIA) and involvement with acts Cubic Zirconia, Spoek Mathambo, and Teachers all signs point to 2011 being a good year for the young producer. Utilizing thick and heavy rhythms while optimistic melodies juxtapose against eerie soundscapes, CHLLNGR's debut "Haven" is his most focused, distinctive work to date.
Steve is also from Sacramento and a very close homie of ours....this will be his first time playing Grimey and were excited to see what hes been workin on.
